This conference will present the history of trains in Puerto Rico, those that went almost around the entire island and those that served some cities in Puerto Rico. It will present how these cities urbanscape was influenced and changed with this new way of transportation and how it slowly but surely disappeared.
The seminar will attempt to explain how not having a mass transit system in place in PR, gave way to the development of suburbia, and how our landscape changed dramatically, urban and rural and the changes it brought upon the historic city centers. Urban planning centered around the notion that everyone would have an automobile and the clash with reality.
The impact of the car on planning strategies, plans and street and highway design and infrastructure. The impact both positive and negative on the economy of Puerto Rico and sadly beautiful buildings train stations that were demolished because the new methods of transportation the car would be the cure for al mobility.
The conference will cover the history of the rail system in PR from 1891 – 1957 and then go on to present new plans for the Tren Urbano, and discarded plans for rail mass transit in PR.
